ROUTE GUIDE

Spouse & Family ILR

The stable 5-year route for partners of British citizens.
Key challenges: Financial Requirement and Cohabitation Proof.

💰 Financial Requirement

The rules changed significantly in April 2024. Which version applies to you?

Applied Before April 2024
Applied After April 2024

Target: £18,600 / year

You benefit from transitional protections if you applied before April 2024. Combined income of £18,600 is sufficient.

🐷 Cash Savings Route

Can't meet the income threshold? You can use cash savings to top up or fully meet the requirement.

The Formula

(Savings - £16,000) ÷ 2.5 = Extrapolated Income

Example: To cover £10,000 shortfall → £16,000 + (£10,000 × 2.5) = £41,000 in savings.

Full savings (no job): £16,000 + (£29,000 × 2.5) = £88,500 (New Rules)

🏠 Cohabitation Evidence

You must prove you have lived together for the last 2 years with 6 joint items (or 12 individual) spread across the period.

Common Questions

Does my child automatically get ILR?

No. Children must apply separately as dependants. Often a separate application is required even if included on your visa.

Can I combine my income with my partner's?

Yes — you can combine both incomes to meet the financial threshold (Category A or B rules apply).

What if I receive benefits (PIP / Carer's Allowance)?

You are exempt from the £29,000 threshold and only need to show "Adequate Maintenance" (usually ~£120/week after housing costs).
